MAGALI PASCAL
Parisian Ease Meets Island Spirit: Conscious Select × Magali Pascal
Magali Pascal arrived in Bali from Paris in 1999 during a gap year and immediately understood she would not be leaving. She trained at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, interned at fashion houses in the city, and then followed her instinct back to the island. In 2005 she began designing and sewing her first capsule collection from a small home studio in Bali, inspired by what she calls French savoir-faire filtered through nomadic island life. A year later she opened her first boutique.
Twenty years on, the brand operates four boutiques in Bali, a flagship in Sydney, and ships to over 100 countries. The founding philosophy — small quantities, local artisans, natural fabrics, made by hand — has not changed.
The Clothes
Magali Pascal's collections move between two registers: signature cut-out embroidery and intricate lace detail for evenings, and fluid linens and organic cottons for the long unhurried days the brand was designed for. Silhouettes are feminine without being delicate — pieces that transition from beach to table to a Parisian afternoon without requiring a change of register.
Prints are designed in-house each season to complement the natural fabrics, and because the brand reuses fabric off-cuts across collections, the same print often appears in a different form across multiple seasons. This is not repetition. It is resourcefulness made beautiful — and it means nothing from the studio floor goes to waste.
The Making
Everything is produced in-house in Bali, at a headquarters and factory under one roof — ergonomically designed to support sustainable practices, running on natural light, and recycling through Bali Eco Recycle. The team numbers over 80 people, of whom 90% are Balinese and 98% are women. The brand works with local independent artisans whose craft is preserved through the working relationship rather than displaced by it. Fabrics are sourced locally wherever possible. Single-use plastic is being eliminated throughout the operation.
