Dragon Diffusion

The Art of Woven Leather: Conscious Select × Dragon Diffusion

In 1985, Belgian designer Craig Wright began observing the basket-weaving traditions of indigenous communities across the Pacific Islands, Japan, France, and the United Kingdom. The materials were plant fibre. The technique was ancient. Wright's question was whether the same logic could be applied to leather.

Forty years later, Dragon Diffusion remains the only brand to have developed this technique at the level it has. Each bag is handwoven by a small team of artisans in Chennai, India, a region with an unbroken tradition of livestock farming and leather craft since the 1960s. The leather used is natural, vegetable-dyed without harmful chemicals, and sourced from strips that would otherwise go to waste — irregular or marked hides that cannot be used for other leather goods. The irregularities disappear entirely in the weave.

The Making

Every Dragon Diffusion bag is made on demand and dispatched within eight to ten weeks. No batch production, no inventory built in advance of demand. The weaving process is entirely by hand — artisans use only their hands to interlace fine leather laces prepared using natural vegetable dyes. Each bag develops a patina over time that enhances rather than diminishes it. A Dragon Diffusion bag does not wear out. It becomes itself.
